This 1950s contemporary home echoes Frank Lloyd Wright’s style of clean simplicity and functionality. We provided several structural renovations and furnishing updates while respecting the original vision of this modernist jewel.
Cooking and entertaining are essential to the owners’ lifestyle, so the enclosed kitchen was opened up to keep social energy flowing through the main living areas. On the private side, two bedrooms were merged into a master suite. Double sliding doors were added to the bedroom to increase light and mirror the original family room archway.
Designing for spaces with strong aesthetics can be challenging. Retaining the signature mid-century block and concrete elements, we gave the floors an earthy splash of red for warmth. The eclectic style of the owners’ furnishings required careful integration of new elements. We chose several artistic works and a fun seating system, while reupholstering select pieces.
An extensive book collection ties everything together. Console and wall shelving was added in the living areas, and a custom-designed walnut bed and shelving offer a calming, grounded feel.
This residence merges the original crisp, utilitarian style with an updated, loft-like vibe that suits lively gatherings … and rainy days enjoying a favorite book.
